Classroom Programs

Animal Talesphoto
Animals make wonderful ambassadors for literacy, spurring interest in reading and enthusiasm for learning in students of all ages.  These programs pair some wonderful, well-known stories with a live animal counterpart  to instill a sense of wonder about books and about wildlife!  Featured stories are: Owl Moon by Jane Yolen; The Salamander Room by Anne Mazer; One Tiny Turtle by Nicola Davies; and Fidget's Freedom by Stacey Patterson.
(Available as 30 or 60 minute program)

Nocturnal Animals
Hidden in the dark, nocturnal animals go about their business while we sleep peacefully in our beds.  Who are they?  How do they live? Why are they active at night?  We’ll answer these questions and more, while meeting some live nocturnal animals including an owl and a frog.
(Available as 30 or 60 minute program)

Sea Creatures
Live animals of the estuary are revealed in this exciting program.  We come to your school, bringing a host of animals that make the bottom of the bay their home.  Students see and touch a variety of animals including crabs, snails, sea stars, lobster and sea urchins, while learning about this vast environment that covers 3/4 of the earth’s surface. (30 minutes)

What is That?  (Series)
Programs in this series introduce young learners to the basics of the animal kingdom.  Each topic focuses on features common to the type of animal and is reinforced through the use of artifacts (bones, fur, feathers) and up-close observations of at least one live animal.

Topics in this series include: (30 minutes each except where photospecified)

  • Amphibians

  • Birds

  • Invertebrates

  • Mammals

  • Reptiles

  • Vertebrates (60 minutes)

Field Programs

Bug OUT!
Children are fascinated by the creepy-crawly critters that live outside!  In this exciting hour, students use bug boxes and nets to hunt around the schoolyard in search of ‘bugs’.  They learn to distinguish between some of the different types of invertebrates that live around us and come to understand the role these animals play in the environment. (60 minutes)

Discovery Walk
Children are natural explorers with an affinity for the outdoors.  This very simple, fun program, leads young children on a guided discovery of the natural world.  Learning props are placed in locations in advance of the program for children to discover and a brief activity at each site enhances their learning of the outdoor environment and its inhabitants. (60 minutes)

Nature Awareness
What better way to learn about the senses than to use them?  Students embark on a 45-60 minute exploration of the schoolyard using a series of fun activities that stimulate the senses.  This activity is an excellent introduction to the sights, sounds, fragrances, textures, and maybe even tastes of the outdoors.  (60 minutes)
