Programs for Educators

If you are looking for new and rewarding professional development opportunities, you've come to the right place! Wildlife Learning Company offers fun, science-based, hands-on environmental education workshops for educators, ranging from a 3-hour introductory session to a full 30-hour experience.

All workshops focus on Science/Living Environment teaching standards, but also provide avenues to meet standards in Language Arts/Literacy, Math, Technology, Social Studies and Creative Arts.  Teachers go home with activities to implement immediately in their classrooms!

You arrange the site and recruit participants; we'll take care of all the rest including refreshments, handouts, workshop materials and a great program!

Our goal is to turn "OH NO, Do I HAVE to?" into "WOW, I'm SO glad I went to this workshop"
!

Possible Workshop Topics

Birds
This workshop introduces the basics of avian biology and adaptations of common species as well as an overview of curricula to support bird studies.  Owl pellet dissections and a look at live raptors provide insight into the lives of birds

Cycles & Systems
This workshop examines how the pieces of nature’s puzzle fit together.  Simple experiments and games/activities model food chains/webs, population dynamics, predator/prey interactions and relationships.

Forests & Soil
More than ‘trees’ and ‘dirt’, this program focuses on forest structure, decomposition, soil types and testing.  Examine forest inhabitants and their roles in sustaining this ecosystem.

Freshwater FUN
Study local freshwater habitats through observations of pond invertebrates. Learn how macroinvertebrates are indicators of water quality, the importance of our wetlands and riparian zones, and examine the trials of life of anadramous fishes.

Invertebrates
Capitalize on children’s natural interest in “creepy crawlies” to create interesting experiences.  Learn how to tell the difference between invertebrate groups, learn fun experiments, and build a Tullgren funnel to use at school.

Mammals
Mammals play an important role in our environment.  Learn fun activities that model behaviors, adaptations and interactions between these animals and humans.

Marine Animals
Learn how to set up and maintain a classroom aquarium along with activities to go with it!  Classification, marine food chains and everyday uses of algae.  Study finfish through goyataku, the ancient Japanese art of fish-printing.

Observation & Awareness
Participants explore observation techniques and activities as well as effective methods of recording what we see and learn.  Learn papermaking to create recycled paper journals!

Reptiles & Amphibians
Activities and live animals facilitate understanding of the special features of each group, and examine human attitudes towards these interesting animals.

Watersheds
Fun watershed-related activities cover the water cycle, point and non-point sources of pollution and basic topography.  Build a watershed model and learn ways to use it! (Materials charged at cost)
